If you are applying for a Canada student visa from India
in 2026, you have two main pathways to choose from — the
Student Direct Stream and the Regular Stream. Choosing
the right one can mean the difference between a 20-day
processing time and a 12-week wait.
What is the Student Direct Stream?
The Student Direct Stream or SDS is a fast-track study
permit pathway for eligible students from India and
certain other countries. It was designed to process
applications faster by requiring applicants to complete
more steps upfront before applying.
SDS processing time is guaranteed at 20 calendar days.
What is the Regular Stream?
The Regular Stream is the standard study permit
application process available to all international
students regardless of nationality. Processing times
vary based on the volume of applications IRCC is
handling at the time.
Regular Stream processing time is typically 8 to 16 weeks.
SDS Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the Student Direct Stream you must meet
all of the following requirements.
- You must have a letter of acceptance from a Designated
Learning Institution in Canada. - You must have IELTS Academic with a minimum score of
6.0 in each band and an overall score of 6.0. - You must have paid your first year of tuition in full
before applying. - You must have a Guaranteed Investment Certificate of
CAD 10,000 from a participating Canadian bank. - You must have completed your medical examination
before submitting your application. - You must have a clean immigration history with no
previous refusals or violations.
SDS vs Regular Stream Comparison
- SDS offers 20 days processing time while Regular
Stream takes 8 to 16 weeks. - SDS requires IELTS 6.0 in each band. Regular Stream
does not require a specific IELTS score. - SDS requires a GIC of CAD 10,000. Regular Stream
does not require a GIC. - SDS requires full first year tuition payment upfront.
Regular Stream does not require prepayment. - SDS requires medical examination before applying.
Regular Stream allows medical to be completed later. - SDS generally has a higher approval rate due to the
stricter upfront requirements.
Which Stream Should You Choose?
Choose SDS if your course starts in 2 to 3 months
and you need fast processing. Choose SDS if you have
IELTS 6.0 or above in each band. Choose SDS if you
can pay first year tuition and get the GIC arranged now.
Choose Regular Stream if you do not meet the IELTS
minimum for SDS. Choose Regular Stream if you cannot
prepay tuition or arrange the GIC right now. Choose
Regular Stream if your course start date is 4 or more
months away.
