Frequently Asked Questions — Work Visa

Q1: What is a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)?

A DLI is a school approved by a Canadian province or territory to host international students. Only DLIs can issue the Letter of Acceptance required for a study permit application, so KIOGA Consultancy only shortlists genuinely recognised institutions for our students.

A Guaranteed Investment Certificate is a financial product used to prove you have sufficient funds to support yourself in Canada, commonly required for the Student Direct Stream (SDS) applications. It is not mandatory for all study permit routes but strongly recommended as it can speed up processing. We guide you through setting one up correctly.

Study permit holders can generally work off-campus up to a set number of hours per week during academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks, based on current IRCC policy. We advise on the current limits applicable to your permit.

The PGWP allows international graduates to work in Canada for up to 3 years after completing an eligible program, with the permit length generally matching your study program's duration. It is one of the strongest pathways toward permanent residency through the Canadian Experience Class.

Processing times vary by country and stream, but Student Direct Stream applicants with complete documentation typically see faster processing than standard applications — often within a few weeks — while standard study permits can take 4 to 8 weeks or longer during peak season. We recommend applying as early as possible after receiving your LOA.
