Frequently Asked Questions —USA Student visa

Q1: What is the F1 visa and who needs it?

The F1 visa is the primary non-immigrant visa for international students enrolled in full-time academic programs at SEVP-certified US institutions. You need an F1 visa once you have been accepted and issued a Form I-20 by your university, before you can travel to the US to begin your studies.

SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) tracks international students throughout their US education. The SEVIS I-901 fee must be paid before your visa interview and is separate from your visa application fee. We guide you through correct payment and documentation.

You must demonstrate sufficient funds to cover at least the first year of tuition and living expenses as stated on your I-20, along with a reasonable plan for subsequent years through savings, sponsor income or education loans. We help you prepare financial documentation that satisfies consular requirements.

Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows F1 students to work in the US for up to 12 months after graduation in a role related to their field of study. STEM graduates can apply for a 24-month extension, giving up to 3 years of work authorization. We guide students through OPT applications as graduation approaches.

After receiving your I-20, DS-160 submission and SEVIS payment can be completed within days, but visa interview appointment availability varies by consulate and season — typically 3 to 5 weeks, longer during peak intake periods (May–August). We recommend starting the process as early as possible.
